Compulsory Microchipping of Dogs

From 6 April 2016 your dog must be microchipped by law

This was announced by the government back in 2013. From 6 April 2016, owners will need to:

  • Have their dog microchipped and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases available
  • Register the details of any new owner before they sell or give the dog away
  • Keep their contact details up-to-date on the microchip databases

Permanent identification of dogs through microchipping has many benefits. In all dogs it can help reunite strays with their owners, and encourage responsible ownership. In pedigree dogs it facilitates the reporting of hereditary health problems.
